Taking Stock

In the past four weeks, here’s a bit of what’s been on my radar:

PERFORMANCES I’ve seen: The Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Company. Carol Jantsch, principal tuba player for the Philadelphia Orechestra. World-renowned jazz trombonist, Robin Eubanks. The high school jazz band and orchestra. The high school dance troupe. Lecture and performance by a Schumann scholar and pianist. Fiction reading by Jack Driscoll, author of ten books.
BOOKS I’ve read: Call it North Country by John Bartlow Martin. The Killing Zone by Frederick Downs. Lake Effect by Erika Alin.
NEW EXPERIENCES I’ve had: Seeing a snowy owl, completely black squirrels, and a red-headed woodpecker. Going ice fishing. Backwoods snowshoeing. Having neighbors (which I haven’t had, really, for at least a few years). Being treated to a very, very fancy dinner (that included duck sausage and beef from cows who are massaged every day by farmers in Japan).
APPLICATIONS I’ve completed: The Anderson Center, Vermont Studio Center, and Fishtrap Imnaha Writer’s Retreat.
SUBMISSIONS I’ve mailed: Interlochen Review, North Carolina Literary Review, Quick Fiction, and 7th Annual Glass Woman Prize.
STUDENT PAPERS I’ve read: More than I can count.
